About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University. This integrated faculty brings opportunity for innovation, progressive thinking and challenging the status quo by establishing productive research units that cross traditional academic school and discipline boundaries. We operate across four large health precincts (three metropolitan and one regional/rural) where University facilities are co-located with hospitals and medical research institutes.

We are currently seeking to appoint an outstanding academic at the level of Associate Professor or Professor of Psychiatry to provide clinical and academic leadership in the area of psychiatry across the West Precinct in partnership with Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) Mental Health Services. Situated within the Faculty’s Sydney Medical School, at the Westmead Clinical School, the position’s objectives are to:

• increase high quality and internationally recognised clinical research, health services and health policy initiatives focused in mental health;
• support the generation of basic, clinical or population-based research findings that address current government priorities in mental health;
• generate research that is transformative in nature and achieves high impact in clinical practice transformation in the specialist NSW health sector;
• Provide input into the teaching and assessment of medical students within the Specialty of Psychiatry; and
• Support the teaching and training of health professionals more generally within the University and the WSLHD

There will be a clinical contribution (estimated at 0.4FTE position) within the WSLHD Mental Health Services, which will involve the clinical care of inpatients and/or outpatients.

The position will combine teaching and research and will contribute to the educational programs associated with the Sydney Medical School and the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

About you

The ideal candidate will possess relevant achievements in research and clinical experience in mental health disorders. The candidate will be expected to work with the relevant population matching their clinical expertise and address the full range of bio-psycho-socio-cultural aspects of mental illness and its treatment. They will be expected to support educational and research activity across the West Precinct including postgraduate education and support of the LHD’s professional education programs.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a 5-year fixed-term position on a full-time basis, with the possibility for renewal subject to performance and funding agreement. The appointment is also subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.

The selected candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Relocation assistance will also be provided if required.
