- Available for both domestic and international candidates.
- The scholarship will provide a stipend allowance equivalent to the University of Sydney’s Research Training Program (RTP) stipend rate (indexed on 1 January each year) for:
- up to 1.75 years for a successful full-time Master of Criminology (MCrim) by research or Master of Laws (LLM) by research recipient
- up to 3 years for a successful full-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) recipient.
- Recipients enrolled part-time will be provided with a stipend allowance equivalent to 50 percent of the full-time stipend rate, for up to 3.5 years for MCrim by research or LLM by research, or up to 6 years for PhD.
Note: The scholarship is subject to satisfactory academic performance. Extensions are possible as per Terms and Conditions.
Academic Tuition fees and the Student Services Amenities Fee (SSAF) are not covered by this Scholarship for an international recipient.
About the opportunity
John O’Brien Memorial Research Scholarship in Criminal Law and Criminology is a postgraduate research scholarship available for up to 3 years at the RTP rate of $36,529/per annum for the Doctor of Philosophy and up to 1.75 years for the Master of Philosophy. The scholarship opportunity aims to support research students at the University of Sydney Law School who are undertaking research in criminal law and/or criminology.

About you
The suitable candidate will display the following background, skills and experience:
- have an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled to study full-time or part-time in a PhD, MCrim by research or LLM by research at the Sydney Law School
- be willing to research in the disciplines of criminal law and/or criminology
- hold at least one of the following degrees in Law or a relevant discipline:
- a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours; or
- a Master’s degree by Research; or
- a Master’s degree by coursework at a High Distinction or Distinction level including a research component equivalent to 25% of one year’s full-time enrolment.
Note: Current PhD, MCrim by research or LLM by research students are eligible to apply, but preference will be given to commencing applicants.
